About French

French is a truly international language spoken around the world on all five continents and the most widely taught second language after English.

It is an official language in 29 countries and one of the official languages of the African Union, the European Union, the Council of EuropeFIFA, the International Court of Justice, InterpolNATO, the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, the United Nations and its agencies (where it is also one of the two working languages along with English), the International Red Cross, and the World Trade Organisation. It is the official language of the International Postal Union and the International Olympic Committee.

La Francophonie, an international organisation of countries which are French speaking or include a prevalence of French speakers and French culture, has 55 member states.

To learn French is to enrich your relations with French speakers, to appreciate and participate more fully in a distinctive culture. Learning French will provide opportunities for mutuality and exchange that are not possible without knowing the language.  French gives you direct access to a world of literature, film and ideas. Many of the modern ideas in social sciences, architecture, technology, politics, fashion, music, to mention a few, originate in France and other French speaking countries. It may be several years before translations of the prime texts are available. Much of France's long and influential history and culture is best known, and sometimes can only be known, through its language. French is a sought after second language by employers and speaking French permits greater access to international business,
